BUYER’S GUIDE5 DISTINCT OPTIONSROLL-AWAY SAFETY FIRST

The biggest shopping mistake is comparing every product labeled “chock” as if it serves the same purpose. Tire wedges resist rolling at ground level; between-wheel devices address rocking; wheel locks address security. The right selection begins with the actual risk you need to control.

04 / Best tandem-axle stabilizer add-on

BAL X-Chock 28012 (2-Pack)

Between-tire stabilizerPublished span 1⅜–10 in; tandem tires

A different category: opposing pressure between tandem tires reduces rocking after a trailer is already parked and secured.

What matters: BAL lists 28012 as the double pack and publishes a 1⅜-to-10-inch adjustment range for its standard X-Chock. Check tire spacing and whether the standard or wider variant fits.

Why choose itA different category: opposing pressure between tandem tires reduces rocking after a trailer is already parked and secured.
Why skip itDo not purchase it as your only anti-roll wheel chock. It is a stabilizing accessory, not a replacement for ground-contact chocks.

04 Seven checks before parking

A correctly chosen chock is part of a broader parking procedure. Use this checklist before deciding which material, size and quantity to buy.

  1. Measure the tire: Record tire outside diameter and width; compare with any stated product size limits rather than treating all trailer chocks as universal.
  2. Identify the job: For preventing roll-away, choose a ground-contact wedge; for reducing tandem-axle rocking, consider a between-tire stabilizer only as an addition.
  3. Assess the surface: Firm pavement, packed gravel, loose soil, wet grass and ice do not offer the same traction. Follow the chock manufacturer’s surface restrictions.
  4. Assess the grade: Park as level as practical. On a slope, use chocks suited to the conditions and follow trailer manufacturer guidance; do not assume a small plastic wedge can hold every rig.
  5. Check quantity and placement: Use the number and position specified for the equipment and situation. Block potential movement in the relevant direction; do not put hands or feet in a rolling path.
  6. Secure the trailer before uncoupling: Use the appropriate brake, parking and tongue-jack procedures for your rig. A chock is only one part of a safe setup.
  7. Inspect and store: Reject cracked, distorted or contaminated chocks and replace worn grip surfaces. Keep a dedicated set in the trailer so they are not forgotten.

05 Choose by the problem to solve

Prevent rolling: Select appropriately sized ground-contact wedges, place them according to the relevant instructions, and account for grade and ground firmness.
Reduce campsite rocking: If you have closely spaced tandem tires, a BAL X-Chock may improve stabilization after the trailer is already secured. Its fit range is not proof of anti-roll holding capacity.
Deter theft: Consider a purpose-built wheel lock as an additional security measure, not as a substitute for safe parking. CURT’s #23175 lock is marked discontinued by CURT, so verify current alternatives rather than relying on that model being available.

For industrial loading docks or forklift entry, recreational RV chocks are not automatically appropriate. Workplace procedures and applicable rules are different; OSHA discusses wheel restraints and trailer movement hazards in that context.

06 Frequently asked questions

Are X-Chocks a replacement for regular wheel chocks?

No. BAL’s X-Chock is designed to stabilize tandem tires by applying opposing pressure. Use suitable ground-contact wheel chocks to resist rolling; add an X-Chock only for the separate stabilization job.

How many wheel chocks should I carry?

There is no responsible one-number answer for every trailer, grade and tire configuration. Follow the trailer and chock manufacturers’ instructions, and carry enough to block movement in the required directions.

Are rubber chocks better than plastic?

Rubber often offers a heavier, grippy wedge, while molded plastic can be lighter and easier to store. Material alone does not prove holding performance; geometry, tire size, surface and instructions matter more.

Can I chock a trailer on gravel?

Only if the selected chock and site conditions permit secure placement. Loose gravel can move beneath a wedge. Seek a firmer, more level location if the chock shifts or cannot seat against the tire.

Should I place chocks before disconnecting the tow vehicle?

Follow your trailer’s specific parking and uncoupling procedure. In general, stabilize and secure the trailer before releasing the coupling; never depend solely on a tongue jack or a wheel chock.

Do wheel chocks prevent trailer theft?

Ordinary wedges are not locks. A wheel chock lock is a different security product; even a lock does not guarantee theft prevention. Use appropriate layered security if the trailer will be unattended.

07 The right chock starts with fit

For a conventional camper on suitable firm ground, a properly sized ground-contact wedge pair is the starting point—not a between-tire stabilizer. Choose compact rubber for durable handling, lighter molded options where their published tire limits fit, and use additional stabilizers or security locks only for their intended jobs. Inspect the parking surface and follow your trailer’s instructions every time.
